What information is collected, and who is it shared with?

Unfolding Bytes is an independent blog with the goal of informing people about noteworthy things happening in the tech industry. It’s not a business, and doesn’t benefit from the implicit collection and sharing of user data. The only information that’s autonomously collected is your IP address, which is required for your computer to retrieve the website data. All other data you submit, with the exception of public data like posts and articles, is handled strictly for the intent of the submission and isn’t shared with other users or third-party service providers.

Articles and posts created by author profiles are stored on this server and become publicly visible only once “Publish” is clicked in the editor. Images uploaded by these profiles are stored on this server and are publicly accessible from the moment they are uploaded, however Unfolding Bytes provides no direct method for retrieving images that aren’t explicitly linked to.

This website uses Cloudflare to protect against spam on certain pages. When you visit those pages, information about your connection is processed by Cloudflare and handled according to their Turnstile Privacy Addendum.

  • IP addresses are temporarily logged by this server, and are used for debugging and spam-prevention. They are erased within 30 days. IP addresses logged by Cloudflare abide by its privacy notice (linked above).
  • Emails entered into newsletter subscription forms are stored on this server and are used only to send you updates when new content is posted. They are not shared with any third-party service providers, and are permanently erased when you unsubscribe.
  • Author profiles consist of a username, full name, email, biography, and password. Authors can control which name is publicly visible from their profile dashboard.
Profile pictures are managed by Gravatar. Unfolding Bytes communicates with Gravatar by sending a hashed version of your profile’s email address to Gravatar’s servers. If a Gravatar profile picture matches that hash, it is returned and displayed only in the author dashboard. Unfolding Bytes does not locally store these images.

Cookie Policy

Cookies are used to save and remember preferences you have set on this site. If you log into an account, change the page theme, or check a box indicating you would like information to be saved, it is stored locally in your web browser and can be cleared by erasing your cookies.

When you log in to an account, several cookies will be initialized to save your login information and preferences on this server. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

How long is your data retained for?

Your personal data is kept only until it’s no longer necessary for the service operation.

  • Subscriber contact information is kept until you unsubscribe, at which point the email addresses are permanently erased from this server.
  • Author profiles are kept and preserved indefinitely, unless the author requests a deletion. In that case, all data owned by that account is exported, sent to the author, and removed from this server.
  • Messages sent with this site’s contact form are stored in the recipients inbox until they delete them.

Your rights over your data

Any work you publish to Unfolding Bytes remains yours, and can be accessed, modified, or deleted at any time by logging into your account. If you’re unable to access your account, you can request a password reset through the login portal, or message me through my contact form.

If you would like to request a copy of or permanently erase any personal information stored on this server, send a message titled “Data deletion request” with your name and email using the contact form, and state that you wish to export or permanently erase all personal information associated with your email address.
